Over the years to Barn has been updated. In 1999 a new kitchen was built and an extra toilet area was installed, the latest being the addition to our patio area. The next door pub sold us some land in 2019 and we were able to create a lovely garden. A number of local organisations use the building ranging from children’s dance classes, Age Concern, CAMEO, WI’s, RSPB, Gardeners Club, Adult Choir, Bridge Club, Horologists, Twe Kwon Do, a number of exercise classes, Latin Dance, plus general hirings for parties, children’s parties, weddings, funerals/wakes, village meetings, school performances, LIONS Club and the local drama group.

Sing for Joy Choir
We are an enthusiastic group of music-loving volunteers providing an opportunity for individuals to sing together in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We celebrate our first birthday at the end of February 2024 and are looking forward to our second year of joyful singing. The importance of singing for good mental health is well documented and it is with this in mind that we have created our friendly and fun-loving sessions.
The group is open to anyone who is experiencing memory loss, physical infirmity or even just loneliness. We aim to cater to the more “senior” age group, though there is no age restriction if you are struggling with day-to-day life and would simply love to sing with others experiencing similar difficulties. Carers are also very welcome and in fact are encouraged to join in the fun!
We cover an eclectic mix of music including show tunes, popular music, old standards, and novelty songs. The members are encouraged to suggest their favourite tunes and it never ceases to amaze us with what they come up with!
The choir meets on Monday mornings (10:30 am to 12:30 pm) during term time at Godstone Baptist Church. A refreshment break is included which gives everyone a chance to share stories and experiences and make new friends. The sessions cost £1 per person and only when you attend (there are no subs). We offer a free taster session so you can try us out before signing up.
If you are interested or know of someone who might benefit from the choir, please get in touch at singforjoy@godstonebc.org
We hope to see you soon at Sing For Joy!
GODSTONE GARDENERS’ CLUB 50th ANNIVERSARY
__________________________________________________________
On Wednesday 3rd June, the Godstone Gardeners’ Club met at the White Hart Barn to celebrate the Clubs’ 50th Anniversary. All those years ago when the club was formed, meetings were held in the Anna Greenwell room above The Club premises on the Green. However it became apparent that the very steep stairs to the Anna Greenwell Room were proving too much for members and prospective members alike so meetings were transferred to the White Hart Barn, where they have been held ever since.
At this special social evening our President, Sylvia Pocock, who has been a continuous member for at least 47 of those years, unveiled a bench in the garden of the White Hart Barn marking our special year. We hope that visitors to the Barn will enjoy resting there whilst no doubt enjoying a cup of tea with cake, or even something a little stronger! We are pleased that the Committee of the Barn gave us permission to donate the bench.
We had a special cake made, by Debbie Fairweather of the village, and this is shown above.
We hold meetings on the first Wednesday of every month, 7.30 p.m. for 8.00 p.m., except for June and December. We have speakers on every horticultural subject and many other subjects besides. We also have practical meetings and this January we all bought our secateurs along and a great time was had cleaning/renovating and sharpening them for the year ahead. We have our Annual Show in September - open to everyone - and this year, in May, we re-introduced our Plant Sale and I am pleased to say it was extremely popular not only for the quality and variety of plants available to buy, at very reasonable prices, but we also served tea/coffee and homemade cake and as it was a lovely day, half the village seemed to be sitting in the White Hart Garden catching up with local news. Now they will have an additional bench to sit on.
The WHB is the perfect place for groups to meet - easy, flat access - kitchen, modernised loos, sound system, good lighting and a stage - should you feel the need to do a “turn”. Godstone Village is very lucky to have such a place to meet.
The Barn has been used for many functions over the years. These photos of June and her twin sister Anne's 90th Birthday are one of the many occasions
We have also included a picture taken of June's wedding in 1956 - her reception was also held at the Barn.
